The Walk-in Sound Lab

Matthias Kaul, our 2010 composer in residence, will be constructing the Walk-in Sound Lab during the Hitzacker Summer Music Festival.

For a long time, Kaul has been fascinated by the sounds generated in everyday life and by how we can sharpen our perception to discover them. In the garden outside the concert hall, he will be building a “surrealmusical stage”, a lab full of whimsical sounds and dazzling objects.

How about a refrigerator, a Christmas tree, the glass tubing from an old East German dairy, several dozen instruments and further odds and ends?

The lab will be growing day by day. Visit the Walk-in Sound Lab, where performances will take place before and after each festival concert. Admission is free.
