Quartet Academy

Following the Laureate Academy and the Lied Academy of recent years, this year Artistic Director Oliver Wille presents a Quartet Academy. He instructs two particularly talented string quartets from his class at the Hannover University of Music, Theater and Media – and the Summer Festival audience can play fly on the wall. Communication in the Quartet Academy mainly in English language.

Tickets 5,– € at the day/evening box office, admission is free for members of the Society of Festival Friends and holders of the Festival Card.

The Cuarteto Casals is internationally one of the finest ensembles practicing the art of the string quartet. Their viola player, Jonathan Brown, born in Chicago in 1974, teaches in Barcelona and Madrid. In Hitzacker he works with the young quartets at this year's Quartet Academy. Brown himself studied with (among others) Veronika Hagen in Salzburg and has been inspired artistically by such artists as György Kurtág.

Jörg Widmann has long been a particularly popular performer of 21st century music at the Summer Festival in Hitzacker - he last appeared here 10 years ago, which makes his visit this year all the more exciting. In a unique opportunity for the young musicians, he works with both of the Academy's young quartets on his own fascinating first and third string quartets; the latter is known as the "Hunting Quartet".

Outstanding talents in the art of the string quartet. Having been inspired and instructed in masterclasses with highly experienced teachers, the ensembles wraps up the Quartet Academy with a concert performance of two works by Jörg Widmann: the First String Quartet (1997) and the Hunting Quartet (2003).
