Seven Past Seven: Arpeggione

Franz Schubert (1797–1828): Sonate a-Moll für Arpeggione bzw. Cello und Klavier, D 821
Ernest Bloch (1880–1959): From Jewish Life, Suite für Cello und Klavier, Cleveland 1925
Dmitri Schostakowitsch (1906–1975): Adagio aus dem Ballett „The Limpid Stream"
Benjamin Britten (1913–1976): Sonate C-Dur für Violoncello und Klavier, op 65

We begin with Franz Schubert’s enchanting sonata for the arpeggione, the member of the lute family invented in Vienna in 1823. Star guest Mischa Maisky and his daughter then trace an arc to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece, written in 1961 for Maisky’s teacher, Mstilav Rostropovich. It seems the British composer intended to produce a multi-facetted portrait of his friend, the Russian cello virtuoso. The central point of the work is the famous slow movement, which exudes profound gravity and thus demands a performer like Maisky to interpret it, capable as he is of total immersion.
